The City of Calgary Building Program

I had the opportunity to attend an information night about the City of Calgary’s building plan program. Some key highlights and takeaways from the session included the following:

  1. The city is planning to combine their municipal Development Plan with their Calgary Transportation plan. I thought this was good to know, as these were done separately, but now everything will be integrated into one comprehensive plan.

  2. The purpose of the city plan is to understand future land use and plans for growth.

  3. The transportation plan was defined as their mobility network, including pathways and roads.

  4. The goals and key ideas of the plan include: a. Creating walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods. b. Increasing housing choices and options. c. Building a strong downtown.

Some thoughts I had were about what a strong downtown means and why these specific goals were chosen.

It is my understanding that this plan will await a final decision from the council as part of the rezoning conversation. For more information on what isn’t changing and how things are currently done, I’ve included a link to the presentation and additional City resources that were provided, where we can find more information.
